I had an interview for UI on 12/13/2013, what is the next step?

unemployed_personQ) I had an interview on 12/13/2013 for approval of my request for unemployment insurance.

I had been terminated from my longstanding years work position.

It has been a week now and I have not been contacted about approval
for UI. I filed to certify online on 12/13//2013. What is the next step? Thank you. Sheila

A) It can take some time for your unemployment insurance claim to be processed and approved after your interview. Generally, it can take several weeks to receive a decision on your claim. You can check the status of your claim by logging into your online account or by contacting your state’s unemployment office. If you have not received a decision after a few weeks, it may be a good idea to contact the unemployment office to inquire about the status of your claim.

According to the Federal Department of Labor website you can expect your first unemployment check two or three weeks after you apply so long as you have submitted all of the required information. For some states there is usually a waiting period of one week between the time you become unemployed and when you are eligible for benefits. This means you won’t receive an unemployment check during the first week you are out of work. You can also call or visit your local unemployment office and speak with a counselor regarding how long it will take to get your application approved. Once approved you will get a notification in the mail with instructions on how to certify during the weeks you are out of work.
